“I enjoy getting students to think deeply about mathematics and to actively participate in the material they are learning,” new math teacher Timothy Behan said.

Behan studied math at Vassar College, where he discovered his love of teaching, he said. Behan volunteered at a local school and worked as a tutor during college.

After graduation, Behan earned a Master of Arts in Teaching degree and subsequently taught at a New Jersey high school.

Behan is passionate about math and aims to share that excitement with his students, he said.

Behan interviewed for the position by presenting a lesson the day after school had closed for the summer, he said. “Despite this, the classroom was filled with students who had come to see my lesson. I think this shows just how dedicated students at Horace Mann are,” Behan said.

Outside of the classroom, Behan strives to improve his culinary skills, he said. “I like to cook and bake. I’ve recently been trying to get better at making bread.”

Behan also enjoys hiking, knows how to knit, and excels at trivia, especially on the subject of geography, he said. Currently, his favorite TV show is Arrested Development, and he has an identical twin brother.
