  • “Romeo, Romeo wherefore art thou, Romeo?” cried Isabella Steele, who played the title female protagonist in a performance of Romeo and Juliet MD students watched last Wednesday.

This year, the MD was treated to a production of Romeo and Juliet, a play the entire 7th grade is currently reading. Midday last Wednesday, the entire Middle Division reported to Gross Theater to witness the third annual presentation by the Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey. In addition to performing the play, the company had a series of sessions with each MD class, during which they taught students how to better perform Shakespeare monologues.

Last month Middle Division administrators and Flik Food services made a joint decision to remove candy from the cafeteria during lunch hours, between 10:30 and 1:30, Senior Director of Flik Dining Services Brenda Cohn said. “We were concerned about the amount of candy purchased by sixth and seventh graders. They were buying candy instead of a good lunch,” Cohn said.

Cohn attributed part of the problem to the sudden freedom of choosing foods Middle school students have in the cafeteria. “In the Lower School cafeteria, students were only provided with two meals a day, hot lunch and cold lunch. However, new MD students are exposed to a wide array of items, candy included,” Cohn said. “We see a great increase in the quantity of candy consumed.”

With an undefeated record, this year’s MD swim team “was the strongest in the history of the program,” Head Swim Coach Michael Duffy said. The Sea Lions won all of their dual meets, and almost all of the invitational meets, establishing themselves as one of the better middle school swimming squads in the New York area.

The team’s last meet against Dalton was cancelled, but Duffy said that he was confident HM would have won, looking back at the team’s impressive previous performances. HM had already defeated Dalton at the Riverdale Invitational meet earlier this year, and the only two teams that could stay competitive with the Sea Lions were Hackley and Ardsley, Dante Kulik (7) said.
