History teacher Elisa Milkes has been named Chair of the History Department, according to Upper Division Head David Schiller.

Milkes said that she is planning to work to facilitate discussion among department members and to implement the ideas that come from those conversations.

Hosting a series of conversations with parents, faculty, and staff on the strengths and weaknesses of the school, Head of School Tom Kelly launched a process last week to determine the five or six major priorities of the school for the next five years, he told The Record.

These meetings and subsequent discussions among administrators and others will culminate this fall with the release of a “strategic plan” document outlining the steps to address each priority, Kelly said. The plan, though not necessarily leading to program changes, will highlight “conversations that need to be had,” Kelly said.

A former State Department chief plans to address United States foreign policy next week at the second annual Alexander Capelluto Memorial Lecture Series, established last year to bring prominent speakers to the school. Ambassador Charles Hill will give a lecture titled “Optimism or Pessimism? Is Anything Going Right in the World.” The presentation is based on his 45 years of experience as a foreign diplomat in both the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
