  • To the Editor,

For every year in recent memory, the senior prom has been held at the Pierre Hotel. For reasons that have yet to be explained, the administration changed the location of this year’s prom to Chelsea Piers. A poll of the senior class showed that less than 8% agreed with the decision, and that over three-quarters would rather the prom be held at the Pierre, as usual.

    To the Editor,

My memories of Mr. Castleman center on English class during the “trailer park years” at Horace Mann, just about 10 years ago. A towering, commanding figure, he inspired both respect and awe in his students as he entered a room, or passed us in the hallways — especially to those meek, tiny 8th graders we were. But the wondrous thing about him was that second after he looked you in the eye, radiating warmth and support, and spoke to you — softly, gently, with affection and authority at the same time. This struck me the first time we met, and in every conversation we had thereafter.

Soon after the administration unilaterally vetoed Swim team spirit before Ivy Championships – ending a 20-year tradition in the process – rumors that the administration had changed the senior prom venue from The Pierre to Pier Sixty began to circulate. Without consulting seniors, the administration broke another longstanding school tradition; senior prom has been held at The Pierre for decades.

On top of this, as reported on page one in today’s issue, approximately 40 of 110 Mannikin senior poll categories had been cut, including long-established ones that we have enjoyed for years, such as “Biggest Ladies’ Man” and “45-year-old trapped in an 18-year-old body.”
